Pastor Notes July & August

Jesus died to take away my sins. If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed! The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God lest any man should boast. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosoever would believe in Him, would not perish but have eternal life. I came that they might have life and have it more abundantly. These are all very "Lutheran" thoughts and verses. We have been taught them since our earliest remembrances. Sometimes, though, I wonder if they are so familiar they lose their wonder in our hearts and we take them for granted? Billy, Dolly, Jeffrey, and P.J. have had so much fun on vacation. They are so full of energy; they could easily go back tomorrow and start over again! But little do they know, and as we can see in the background, Mommy and Daddy are completely exhausted. They have "spent" everything, glad to have done it of course, for the benefit of the children.

The minute I saw this cartoon I could not help but to think of what has been done for me on the cross of Calvary. My life is such a joy and I am ever so ready to rejoice in every minute of it. Not only am I sufficiently provided for in a material sense, but I am ever aware my sins are forgiven. But the reason that is so, is that I serve a God who loves me beyond comparison, and has done for me what is inconceivable. He sent His one and only Son to take my sins upon Himself, to die a brutal, lonely death upon a cross, and finally to rise again from the dead. There was a price paid for my forgiveness, akin to the price paid for the children's happiness in the cartoon.
